Introducing GridLock: Hidden Magnet Stability for Your Gridfinity Setup

Tired of Gridfinity organizers and holders tipping over mid-project? Whether you're repairing electronics on your workbench, organizing your hobby bench, or rearranging your maker station, a spilled bottle or knocked-over tweezers can kill your flow fast.

That's why we created GridLock. Our in-house upgrade that embeds a single 30mm × 2mm disc magnet directly into the print. No glue, no visible hardware; just a clean, professional finish and strong magnetic grip when paired with our GridLock Magnetic Baseplate.

GridLock came from our own frustrations with standard Gridfinity magnet setups: printing overhangs for 4 holes per bin (8 total with the base), gluing or press-fitting tiny 6mm × 2mm magnets, and fighting to keep all 8 magnet orientations consistent. With GridLock, you only deal with 2 large magnets per item (75% fewer overall), making installation simpler, cleaner, and more reliable.

How GridLock Works

  • On our GridLock Magnetic Baseplate, it grips securely: no tip-overs, perfect grid alignment, and effortless rearrangement.

How Many Magnets Are Installed?

Our GridLock Magnetic Baseplate features a magnet installed in every single grid space for maximum coverage and consistent hold across your entire setup.

On the product side, the number of embedded magnets depends on the design's Gridfinity footprint:

  • 1×1 units: 1 magnet
  • 1×2 to 1×7 units: 2 magnets (one at each end for balanced hold)
  • 2×2 and larger units (up to our max printable 7×7): 4 magnets (one per corner for rock-solid stability)

For designs larger than 2×2, we use 4 magnets as standard unless the specific geometry requires more (or a customer requests additional). This keeps things efficient while ensuring excellent performance on our baseplate.

Real-World Testing from Our Workshop

In our shop, GridLock holds up daily on busy workbenches. Taller designs and compact 1x1 units (like our Bottle Holder or MaAnt D2 Grinding Pen Holder) stay stable even when accidentally bumped while reaching for tools or fluids. While GridLock shines out in open areas, we've also tested it on standard lightweight Gridfinity baseplates inside metal tool cabinets and even through thin foam-lined drawers, the hold is noticeable.

This upgrade shines for:

  • Taller or top-heavy organizers prone to shifting
  • Compact 1x1 units on crowded surfaces
  • Any setup needing quick, reliable stability without hassle

Pros & Cons of GridLock

Pros:

  • Only 2 large magnets per item (vs. 8 small in standard setups) making it easier to keep track of orientation and installation
  • Hidden, no-glue design for a professional, clean finish
  • Superior stability on our baseplate which greatly reduces tip-overs, keeps alignment perfect, and gives a satisfying "snap" into place

Cons:

  • If storing magnetic-sensitive items, deep recesses near the magnet can attract them (it's up to the user to decide if that's an issue for their setup)
  • Higher upfront magnet cost: 30mm × 2mm discs run $1–$1.50 each (depending on supplier/quantity), vs. ~$0.03 for 6mm × 2mm though overall fewer magnets mean savings in time and hassle

Our GridLock magnet design works exclusively with our own GridLock Magnetic Baseplate. While it may work with others, we do not guarantee performance or compatibility with other magnetic surfaces, baseplates, or third-party designs. For best results, always pair our GridLock products with our GridLock Magnetic Baseplate.

Which Products Feature GridLock?

All of our designs are developed and produced in-house. Customers can choose to have us embed the GridLock magnets during printing and it's entirely optional, so you decide if the upgrade fits your needs. This makes every design GridLock-compatible when choosing the GridLock Upgrade option when place your order.

For now, we don’t have GridLock-compatible designs uploaded since we’re still searching for a reliable source for 30mm × 2mm magnets. Once we find a good match, we’ll update the designs with the exact magnet dimensions and share links to them. Magnets can vary slightly from their listed size, so we want to ensure accuracy. When we’ve locked down a solid source, we’ll add the GridLock-compatible designs and provide magnet links for DIYers.
