The Sega Saturn originally uses a volatile SRAM chip powered by a CR2032 battery, which also powers the real-time clock. This setup often results in quick battery drain, leading to loss of save data when the battery dies.

By replacing the SRAM chip with an FRAM chip, you switch to non-volatile memory that retains data without needing constant power. This means your game saves are safe for decades, irrespective of the battery life.
